Cali is a modern city located in a valley of flat, fertile land; sugar plantations and mills have been the driving force behind its development. Life in the old haciendas can be appreciated in El Paraíso, site of La María, the famous novel by Jorge Isaacs; Cañasgordas, site of El Alférez Real by Eustaquio Palacios; and the Piedechinche hacienda. Immediately after the Christmas holidays, during the last week of the year, the Sugar Cane Festival takes place. It is famous for its horse-back rides, its bullfighting season, and popular dances by the music of the best orchestras in the country.

Buga, Palmira, Tuluá and Cartago are small cities in the Department of the Cauca Valley whose architectural beauty of the 17th and 18th centuries is acknowledged by many.

The Embalse Calima (Calima Dam), thirty minutes away from Buga by car, is an ideal spot for water sports

The National Natural Park of Los Farallones (steep rocks) is located west of Cali. On a clear day, the jungle of the Department of Chocó, the Cauca River, and snow capped mountains may be easily seen.
Botanical Garden: an ecological refuge par excellence, it is also a research center and a shelter for Colombian fauna and flora.
