This is one of the four main cities in the country. Its industrial and trade development revolves around the port on the Magdalena, the longest river in Colombia. The great number of migrants welcomed by Barranquilla have enriched tradition and rendered the city its cosmopolitan, festive character. The buildings and houses in the El Prado neighborhood display a Mediterranean architecture adapted to the Caribbean. The Amira de la Rosa Theater is the place for cultural events, and the inhabitants of Barranquilla satisfy their passion for football at the Metropolitan Stadium. The city possesses a good number of hotels, restaurants, and night spots where Caribbean music and the gaiety of the curramberos (colloquial term for the inhabitants of Barranquilla) come alive every night. |

The gaiety of the population is expressed during the Carnival of Barranquilla, one of the most authentic in Latin America. The carnival was declared World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
It takes place during the four days prior to the start of Lent, although the preparations last well over a month. It starts with the Batalla de las Flores (battle of flowers) and its spectacular parade of carriages. Next comes the Great Parade with its Afro-Indian comparsas (groups in a traditional costume) walking and dancing on the main avenues. The fun goes on with orchestras and dances with costumes and typical dresses, and ends with the death of Joselito Carnaval, the symbolic character of the celebration.

The capital of the Department of Boyacá is an excellent example of colonial and religious architecture. Proof of this are La Casa del Fundador (the founder’s house), the Plaza de Bolívar, the house of Don Juan de Vargas, the Cathedral, and the numerous churches and convents such as the temples of San Francisco, Santa Bárbara, and Santo Domingo, and the convent of Santa Clara. |
Population: 153.000
Temperature: 14 ° C |
|
Most of the inhabitants of Boyacá live in rural areas, where they devote themselves to cattle-raising, agriculture, and handicrafts. Boyacá was the scenario for several battles for the independence of Colombia. A visit to the Pantano de Vargas (Vargas’s swamp) or the Puente de Boyacá (Boyacá bridge) will bring the tourist closer to several of the most important moments in the country’s history. |
